ECW One Night Stand (2005) Review

ECW reconvienes in the Hammerstein Ballroom for (what we thought at the time) would be a special one night only event!

ECW One Night Stand (2005)
Manhattan, New York 6/12/05

I'd like to fist apologize if I spell some people's names wrong, since some of these guys spell their ring names a ton of different ways.

The show opens with Joey Styles in the ring. He does his "OH MY GOD!" line & welcomes people to the show before introducing Mick Foley as his broadcast partner for the evening.

1.) Lance Storm (with Dawn Marie) vs. "Lionheart" Chris Jericho: ***

Jericho is back to his old school "Lionheart" attire. A fine opener. Justin Credible comes out towards the end of the match to help Lance Storm win. The Impact Players celebrate after the match.

Pitbull #1 (Gary Wolf) comes out to lead a remembrance of Extreme Brothers who have past away since ECW's closing.

2.) Three-Way Dance - Tajiri (with The Sinister Minister & Mikey Whipreck) vs. Super Crazy vs. Little Guido (with The FBI): ***

Everyone but Super Crazy comes out with back up, but that doesn't matter because he does his obligatory Moonsault off the balcony onto all of the FBI (which was in full force tonight). A fine Three-Way Dance that saw Super Crazy win.

3.) Psichosis vs. Rey Mysterio Jr: **1/2

Psichosis comes out in his traditional mask but takes it off before that match start. A decent match here. Nothing really spectacular, but's all about nostalgia.

At this point the Smackdown Crusaders/Invaders show up in one of the balconies, led by JBL & Kurt Angle. Joel Gertner comes to them but Angle takes the mic and shoves him away. They run down ECW while the fans shit on them. This leads to RVD coming out! RVD of course wouldn't be wrestling since he was out with a knee injury. He fires back at the Smackdown Guys and talks about his own ECW Career.

Then Rhyno shows up out of nowhere and hits RVD with a GORE!!! The lights then go out....and it's SABU!!!! We have a match, with Bill Alfonso and all!!

4.) Rhyno vs. Sabu (with Bill Alfonso): **1/4

Alfonso, as you would expect, was blowing the hell out of his whistle. This was ok, but what would you expect from a Rhyno/Sabu match? At least someone went through a table...

After the match, RVD celebrates with Alfonso & Sabu as they pay tribute to The Sheik.

Now the Raw guys show up, led by Eric Bischoff & Edge, who are of course shit on by the Pro-ECW Crowd.

5.) "The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero: ***1/2

A very solid match here. With their friendship in real life, comes great chemistry, which was obvious here. Eddie was still in his heel character he was doing at the time (after he turned on Mysterio). Benoit wins the match.

Joel Gertner shows up again, this time with the Raw guys, but he's shit on again. Bischoff then runs down ECW and the Anti-ECW Crusaders/Invaders turn their backs to the ring for the next match.

6.) Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka: ****

I remember hearing people taking about this match. Now I finally saw it. Basically, they went out there and tried to kill each other....Plain & Simple. Great Match all the same.

Paul Heyman comes out decked in his Black Trench Coat & all. He then talks about ECW and shoots on the Invaders/Crusaders in the balcony. Go look it up on Youtube, it's great.

7.) The Dudley Boyz vs. "The Innovator of Violence" Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman: ***1/4

The Sandman gets to do his full through-the-crowd/beer-bashing entrance, which was awesome! They're about to start when the B.W.O. (that's the Blue World Order) shows up! They cut a little promo before going on the attack. Here comes Kid Kash! Then Ballz Mahoney & Axel Rotten show up with chairs. Kash does a massive dive onto everyone on the outside!! The Impact Players & Spike Dudley end up involved as well. The match sees Cheese Graters, Chairs, and all sorts of other plunder before The Dudley Boyz put Dreamer though a Table that is on Fire to win the match!! More about the classic ECW craziness then anything else.

The Dudleyz go after Beulah (Dreamer's wife, I believe) but Sandman saves her. He asks for a beer, which leads to STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN (an ECW Alumni himself) coming out. He calls all the ECW guys out for a beer bash! They're in the ring, but Austin says he heard there was going to be an invasion, and calls out the invasion guys to come down & fight them. They do, and as they're in the ring, the music of Tazz plays as he goes right after Kurt Angle, locking in the Tazzmission! Eric Bischoff joins the others on commentary as the two sides brawl. ECW eventually gets the upper hand and disposes of the invaders. Austin then tells Foley to bring Bischoff to the ring, and none of Bischoff's cohorts do nothing to help him. Bischoff then takes a 3D, Diving Headbutt, and a 619. Austin asks Bischoff if he can hear him and asks what he thought of the show. He says "Fuck ECW!" and Austin responds by delivering the Stunner. The Dudleyz carry Bischoff out of the building as the ECW guys end the PPV by having a beer bash in the ring.

Overall: 8.75/10

While the match quality of this show alone was fine overall, this show was all about the nostalgic value and the Invasion Storyline. For me personally, I really enjoyed this. Having not been old enough to watch ECW in it's prime, I got a good taste here of what the original ECW was like, and it was awesome! The molten hot crowd just added to this. I should mention that I picked this up last summer as a two pack (with the Rise & Fall of ECW Documentary) for only $4.99 at the local FYE (For Your Entertainment...basically a DVD/Music & other stuff kind of store) store in my local mall, so if you're near one of these stores, see if it's the wrestling section, because it's definitely worth the purchase!!

TNA Victory Road (2008) Review

Booker T challenges Samoa Joe and the World X Cup concludes!

TNA Victory Road (2008)
Houston, Texas 7/13/08

1.) World X Cup Road 3 - Elimination Match - Team Japan vs. Team Mexico vs. Team International vs. Team TNA: ****1/4

I'm not going to bother listing the guys involved, because it's basically a Four-Way with Three guys on each team. This was an awesome opening match. A little bit of sloppiness here & there, but it was overall fast paced & very entertaining. The way the standing's worked was that the first team fully eliminated would get no points, while the next team gone would get one, the next got two, and the winners (Team TNA in this case) got three.

2.) Angelina Love vs. Gail Kim: **1/2

I think it shows the strength of the Knockouts Division at the time that they were confident enough to put two Knockout's Matches on this show. This match itself was decent for the time it was given. Love & Velvet Sky jump Gail Kim afterwords but she is able to get away.

3.) Grudge Match - "The Guru" Sonjay Dutt vs. "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal: **

This came about after Dutt professed his love to SoCal Val at the Val/Jay Lethal wedding at Slammiversary the month prior. It was ok, though things felt kind of crammed, mainly due to the time it got.

4.) TNA World Tag Team Titles - Fan's Revenge Lumberjack Match - LAX vs. Beer Money: **3/4

James Storm & Robert Roode formed a tag team & started whipping people all around the iMPACT Zone with belts/straps, so we get this match, the second of it's kind. Hector Guerrero & Salinas while Beer Money (I believe) had Jackie Moore, but I'm not sure (she may have chickened out & not come down to ringside for fear of getting whipped by the fans but idk). They played up the Lumberjack stuff pretty good but it ended up taking away from the match. Fine for what it was.

5.) TNA Knockouts Championship - Taylor Wilde vs. Awesome Kong: **

Raisha Saeed is with Kong here. An ok match. Not as good as the other Knockout's Match, but mainly because this was about 5 Minutes.

Afterwords, Saeed & Kong beat down Wilde until Abyss of all people makes the save as Kong & Saeed retreat. Abyss carries Wilde to the back.

6.) World X Cup Final - Ultimate X Match - Naruki Doi (Team Japan) vs. Volador Jr. (Team Mexico) vs. Daivari (Team International) vs. Kaz (Team TNA): ***1/2

The winner of this match gets Four Points for their team. The way the standings are up to this point, every team is still in it. While it only got about 10 Minutes, it was still very good, not one of the best Ultimate X Matches, but still good. The memorable moment is Kaz hitting a leg drop from the top of the trusses onto Daivari, who was hanging near the center of the X. But this allows Volador Jr. of Team Mexico to pick up the win & the World X Cup.

The winning team gets interviewed post-match as a distraught & disappointed Kaz looks on.

7.) Full Metal Mayhem Match - Team 3D & Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles, Christian Cage & Rhino: ****

It was great to see an AJ Styles/Kurt Angle feud....unfortunately it was over something stupid (Karen Angle...long story). There is nothing on the line here, so the first Pinfall/Submission wins it. This was very entertaining. I'm a sucker for these type of matches, so I really enjoyed it. Fun stuff here.

8.) TNA World Heavyweight Title - Samoa Joe vs. Booker T: **3/4

Booker T had slowly turned heel in the past few months and is now getting a World Title Shot in his hometown of Houston, Texas. The match was going fine, then there was some silliness with Sting, Joe beating up people, and Sharmell (Booker T's wife, who was at ringside) counting the pin in the ring, leading to her & Booker T making off with the World Title. The finish was just....confusing. Really hurt the match.

Overall: 8.0/10

This was sort of a tale of two cards. One the one hand, you had three really good to great matches on here, those being the X Cup & Full Metal Mayhem Matches. While the Fan's Revenge Match was entertaining, the rest of the Mid-Card was very average and the finish of the Main Event left a sour taste in my mouth. But overall, it was a fine show. I actually really wanted to see this one, and I'd say I got my money's worth with the Top 3 Matches I already mentioned.

I should also note that I did not get this alone, as this was apart of (I believe the first) Cross-The-Line Triple Pack, which also includes the 2008 Editions of Hardcore Justice & No Surrender.

TNA Bound For Glory (2007) Review

Sting and Kurt Angle got at it for the TNA World Title!

*This show is available for FREE viewing on the TNA Wrestling PLUS Youtube Channel*

TNA Bound For Glory (2007)
Atlanta, Georgia 10/14/07

1.) #1 Contender's Ultimate X Match - Triple X (Senshi & Elix Skipper) vs. LAX (Homicide & Hernandez): ***1/2

Whoever retrieves the X becomes the #1 Contender's to the Tag Team Titles. This was a great opener. A fantastic way to kick off the PPV.

2.) Fight For The Right Reverse Battle Royal: **

So basically 16 guys fight on the outside of the ring. Once 8 Men get in the ring, it becomes a battle royal, with the final two duking it out in a one-on-one match. The elimination of the 8 that make it in determine the seeding. It was ok, but it feel like it has Vince Russo's fingerprints all over it.

3.) TNA World Tag Team Titles – “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles & Tomko vs. Team Pacman (Ron “The Truth” Killings & Consequences Creed with Adam “Pacman” Jones): ***

The Tennessee Titans (I believe, or it might have been the NFL, I'm not sure) wouldn't allow Jones to compete in the ring, so they get Consequences Creed to fight in place of Jones (who was still at ringside) via The Freebird Rule. Creed would a short time later become a TNA Regular in the X-Division and later the Tag Division once again. The match itself was fine. AJ & Tomko walk out as the new champs.

4.) TNA X-Division Title – “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal vs. “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels: ***3/4

A very good match here. Daniels & Lethal show here just why they're so good as performers. No real complaints here.

5.) 2/3 Tables Match – The Steiner Brothers vs. Team 3D: **1/4

This was ok, but were you really expecting a lot from these two teams in this stage of their careers? Team 3D get the first "fall" while The Steiners get the 2nd. The Motor City Machine Guns come out to distract Team 3D, which allows The Steiners to get the 3rd "fall" and the win.

6.) TNA Knockouts Title – Gauntlet Match: **1/2

So essentially, this is a Royal Rumble Style Match, except when it comes down to the final 2, it's a regular match. I actually like this version of the gauntlet TNA uses. I thought this was fine for what it was, they did a great job building up Kong as a dominant Monster, which would set things up for the future. Gail Kim ends up outlasting the Voodoo Queen to become the first TNA Knockouts Champion.  It's weird looking back & seeing Angelina Love & Velvet Sky before they got their more well known names and Roxxi in her Voodoo Queen phase.

7.) Special Enforcer: Matt Morgan – Christian Cage vs. Samoa Joe: ****

Morgan is still Jim Cornette's Bodyguard at this point, but he's here in this match to make sure there is a definitive winner. He proves his worth when he prevents Tomko and AJ Styles from interfering. The match itself was pretty good. On par, I'd say, with their World Title Match from earlier in the year.

8.) Monster’s Ball – Raven vs. Black Reign vs. Rhino vs. Abyss: ***

I thought, at this time, this match should have Black Reign vs. Chris Harris vs. James Storm vs. Rhino, based on who was feuding, but I guess they found it necessary for Abyss to be in this match. It was fine. but far from the best Monster's Ball. Abyss wins, his first victory in this match.

9.) TNA World Heavyweight Title – Kurt Angle vs. Sting: ***1/2

This match was very good, but based on how they built it, I felt like it would have, and should have been better. It still was very good match, nonetheless. Karen Angle & Kevin Nash interfere on Angle's behalf, proving that some of their internal bickering was a rouse. Angle looks to go for a 450 Splash, but it turns into a 360 Double Foot Stomp. Stings get the win and World Title. A reign that would last all of two days when Angle won it back at an iMPACT! Taping.

Overall: 8.25/10

Probably TNA's Best Show of the Year. The main event, while maybe not on-quality with a main event on the promotion's biggest show of the year, It was still a good match. Samoa Joe had the MOTN once again, and the X-Divison Matches were excellent as always. The undercard was fine for what was presented, resulting in a overall good showing from TNA.

TNA Sacrifice (2007) Review

Christian Cage, Sting, and Kurt Angle have a World Title Match that....wasn't really a World Title Match.

*This show is available for FREE viewing on the TNA Wrestling PLUS Youtube Channel*

TNA Sacrifice (2007)
Orlando, Florida 5/13/07

Before I start the review, I should explain the circumstances that occurred with this PPV. When TNA started, they were known as NWA-TNA, basically a promotion in partnership with the NWA. Because of this partnership, the promotion was allowed to use the NWA World Heavyweight and World Tag Team Titles as their top titles. TNA broke away from the NWA a few years later (2004 maybe, I'm not sure), but per some agreement, the NWA allowed TNA to continue to use their titles. In 2007, the NWA severed their 5-Year Relationship with TNA on the day of the Sacrifice PPV, stripping Christian Cage & Team 3D of their titles. I found this video where it's explained from the NWA's side of the story. I believe they basically said that Christian Cage was not going to the various territories across the country to defend the title against various wrestlers.

So basically, the titles matches promoted for the NWA World & Tag Team Titles on this PPV were not really title matches, or for championships of any kind at all. The X-Division Title Match was the only real title match on this PPV.

On another note, I like the gimmick they had with this show, where all the title matches (or title match) were Triple Threat Matches.

1.) TNA X-Division Title – Chris Sabin vs. “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal vs. Sonjay Dutt: ***1/2

A very solid opening match. They built up the Lethal/Dutt tension nicely (a little bit ridiculously in the beginning) and the match had greta action throughout. That Lethal/Dutt tension allows Chris Sabin to capitalize and win the match.

Lethal & Dutt get into it afterwords until Kevin Nash breaks it up. Dutt kicks Kevin Nash from behind and retreats hastily. Nash promises to get his hands on Dutt on iMPACT!

2.) Robert Roode (with Ms. Brooks) vs. Jeff Jarrett: **3/4

So basically Roode (I believe) bought Eric Young's contract after Team Canada disbanded, and has been abusing him. Eric called for his friend to help him against Roode, who turned out to be Jeff Jarrett (who recently returned as a face the month before to be apart of Lethal Lockdown on the babyface Team Angle). The match itself wasn't that bad. It was fairly solid. Roode uses underhanded tactics to win, but Jarrett and Eric Young (who came out to save Jarrett from a Guitar Shot from Ms. Brooks) get the last laugh by locking the duo in Figure Four Leg Locks.

3.) “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels vs. Rhino: **1/2

Daniels has undergone a transformation in recent months, becoming a "Sting Disciple" of sorts. The match itself was fine. Nothing really special, but decent. Daniels wins by using a Black Baseball Bat.

Afterwords, Rhino says he's not ending the night this way, and chases Daniels up the ramp. They return the ringside area a short time later, but with Daniels bloodied. Rhino sets up chairs in the ring and goes for the Rhino Driver from the second rope but security comes down to break it up.

4.) Handicap Match – Kip James vs. Basham & Damaja: DUD

Basham & Damaja are The Basham Brothers from WWE. Before the show, the duo attacked VKM at a meet & greet session, sending BJ James to the hospital in the process. Kip goes it alone in this one, and gets beat in 4 Minutes. This is a blah match. Christy Hemme finally gets a measure of revenge, and looks for more after the match until Lance Hoyt makes the save.

5.) Texas Death Match – “Cowboy” James Storm vs. “Wildcat” Chris Harris: ****1/2

I hate when wrestling companies use these weird rules for Last man Standing/Death Matches where pinfalls need to occur before the 10-Count starts. I don't see the point. Anyway, this was an awesome match! MOTN for sure. They definitely redeemed themselves from their horrid Lockdown Encounter the month before.

6.) Senshi vs. Alex Shelley vs. Tiger Mask IV vs. Jerry Lynn: ***1/4

Hard to follow that Texas Death Match, but if you were, the X-Division is a good choice. Another solid match. The crowd was a bit burned out, but still managed to get into it. Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin attack Lynn after the match until Bob Backlund makes the save.

7.) NWA World Tag Team Titles – Team 3D vs. Scott Steiner & Tomko vs. LAX (Homicide & Hernandez): **3/4

The first of two title matches that really isn't a title match. Fine for what it was. Team 3D retained, which was expected.

After the match, Scott Steiner & Tomko get into it, until Scott's brother Rick Steiner makes the save.

8.) Samoa Joe vs. “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles: ***1/2

I enjoyed this one. While not a fantastic match, it was different. AJ was a heel, and they played up the mind games with AJ faking being hurt and then Joe upping Styles by doing the same thing later on in the match. The action itself was great as always.

9.) NWA World Heavyweight Title – Christian Cage vs. Sting vs. Kurt Angle: ***

The second title match that wasn't really a title match. It was really underwhelming for a PPV Main Event (it only went about 10 Minutes) to be honest. The controversial finish (Sting pinning Christian Cage for a Three-Count while at the same time tapping out to the Ankle Lock) leaves the status of the champion in question. I was fine with the finish considering the fiasco that occurred earlier. Not sure if it was the original intended finish or not....would love to know.

Overall: 8.0/10

This was a solid PPV from TNA. The Texas Death Match stole the show and the X-Divison Matches (I'll include Joe vs. Styles in that as well) were all very good. One match is the DUD and the rest while not overly good, are perfectly acceptable matches. One of the better shows from TNA in 2007.

TNA Destination X (2007) Review

Samoa Joe gets his long awaited World Title Shot!

*This show is available for FREE viewing on the TNA Wrestling PLUS Youtube Channel*

TNA Destination X (2007)
Orlando, Florida 3/11/07

1.) Non-Title Ghetto Brawl – LAX (Homicide & Hernandez) vs. Team 3D: ***

This is a Non-Title Match. I enjoyed this. A nice opening brawl to get the crowd into it, though it's technically the first of six (yes you read that right) gimmicks matches on this show. Gang Warfare erupts during the match between the"Latino Nation" and friends of Team 3D. Alex Shelley comes out and nails a frogsplash on Brother Devon through a table, allowing LAX to win. If this was Non-Title, I think Team 3D should have gone over here, but whatever.

2.) Double Bull-Rope Match – “Cowboy” James Storm & Jackie Moore vs. Petey Williams & Gail Kim: **

Eh...probably one of the worst matches of it's kind I've seen. Still ok, but skippable.

3.) Crossface Chicken Wing Submission Match – The Austin Starr vs. Senshi: ***

So apparently The Austin Starr has been having a bit of a feud with Bob Backlund, hence the match stipulation. Backlund distracts Starr, allowing Senshi to lock in the Chicken Wing for the Submission Victory. I think Starr might have attacked Backlund post match, but I don't remember.

4.) The Voodoo Kin Mafia vs. The Heartbreakers: *3/4

What a strange feud. Essentially, if I'm understanding this right, Christy Hemme is fighting for the rights of women in TNA (which would lead to the Knockout Division later in the year) but the VKM, particularly Kip James, have been degrading her in typical men-above-women fashion (ie you belong in the kitchen, that kind of stuff). It was a really odd feud. If I could compare it to anything, I'd compare it to the Mike Mondo/Mike Bennett feud from ROH this past year, where the babyface Mondo molested Bennett's girlfriend, Maria Kanellis, and was pushed as a babyface. The heel/face rolls should have been reversed, but because they weren't, it made the whole thing seem out of place. That same idea, I'd say could be applied here with TNA.

Anyway, Hemme brings in The Heartbreakers (The Heart Throbs from WWE) and they have a match that should have been reversed for TV, instead of a PPV. By the way, Christy Hemme's hair is REALLY long here, like so long it's down to her ass. Not that I'm complaining, I like her hair, just pointing that out.

5.) TNA X-Division Title – 2/3 Falls – Chris Sabin vs. Jerry Lynn: ***1/4

So Sabin's been making fun of Lynn's age...pretty much the story going into this one. While nothing really good, this was a very fine 2/3 Falls match. Sabin retains.

6.) Elevation X: AJ Styles vs. Rhino: **3/4

Basically a Scaffold Match. For what it was, I thought it was perfectly fine. Keep in mind, you'd imagine they'd be very limited once they got up there, but what they did up there was perfectly fine. The crowd was into to, not necessarily in the rowdy sense, but for fear of one of them falling.

7.) Kurt Angle vs. Scott Steiner: **1/2

This match was just ok. That'd be more of a fault of Steiner than Angle, but what are they going to do. The finish appeared botched a little bit, but I felt like the way it came off, it was ok. The match itself was just there.

8.) Last Rites Match – Sting vs. Abyss: ***

Basically a gimmicked up Casket Match, with candles, fake tombstones, and all. Why couldn't they just have a regular casket match? If they did, I would have given this a higher rating, but because of the gimmicked up stuff, it took it down a notch for me.

9.) NWA World Heavyweight Title – Christian Cage vs. Samoa Joe: ****

Joe gets the Ring of Honor Streamer Treatment during his ring entrance. This was a fantastic World Title Match. A shining gem on an otherwise lackluster show. I particularly liked the finish, where Christian sneaked away with the title, but Joe still looked strong because of the way it ended.

Overall: 7.0/10

This was a one match show. The main event is the only reason to really check this out. I guess if you're into Scaffold Matches, then you'd like this to, but the card overall was just really average. Would have been fine if it was just one or two special episodes of iMPACT! (I think they were still 1 Hour at this point), but not on PPV.

Against All Odds 2008 - Barbed Wire Massacre Match - Abyss vs. Judas Mesias: ***3/4

Overall: 8.5/10

In terms of the first volume, I'd say it's a little bit better, with quite a few matches in the ****+ range. But much like the first volume, there is a bit of an issue with match quality, as I feel like you can skip a few matches on this DVD and not miss anything. Still, the matches that are really good are just that, and the rest is enjoyable, to an extent.

TNA Best of the Bloodiest Brawls: Volume 1 Review

TNA goes to the extreme with some of its most violent brawls.

Turning Point 2005 - Barbed Wire Massacre Match - Sabu vs. Abyss (with James Mitchell): ****

Overall: 8.25

If you're into these type of matches, which I am (to an extent), this was a fun watch. While the quality of the matches might be an issue to some (there are only a few matches on here that I would say are excellent), it's still very entertaining, as I mentioned, and I'd say it's worth the purchase (plus it's probably been discounted at this point since it's been out there for a number of years now).

Overall: 9.0/10

I actually really enjoyed this DVD...maybe part of it is because I'm a sucker for these types of matches, I don't know. You get to look at a number of different matches that have become synonymous with TNA over the years. There are some really famous TNA matches on this DVD, and a ton of other great ones. However, I will say that there is a quality issue, as not all of the matches are great. There are a good deal of matches on here that are good to very good, but not standout compared to some of the other matches on here. Still, I think this is a great buy and definitely one to get if you're looking for TNA stuff.

TNA Slammiversary 2006 Review

The annual King of the Mountain Match headlines TNA's 4-Year Anniversary Celebration

If you didn't know, TNA had this Youtube Service called TNAwrestlingPLUS. Basically for a monthly fee of I think about $5 (American) you can watch any of TNA's PPVs on Youtube (not sure if it's per show or not). Anyway, it tunrs out that while you have to pay the money to get the service, they do have a select number of shows that are available for free viewing. This was one show that I had been looking to watch (I had seen the Main Event but not the full show), so I went ahead and checked it out.

TNA Slammiversary 2006
Orlando, Florida 6/18/06

1.) Bingo Hall Brawl - Team 3D vs. The James Gang: ***

This was a pretty fun opening match. Exactly what every PPV should have....and entertaining opener that gets the crowd fired up. Lots of plunder...as one would expect.

2.) Handicap Match - Rhino vs. Team Canada (Bobby Roode & Coach D'Amore): **

Not bad for what it was. The big story of this match (and going in) was Rhino getting his hands on D'Amore. While not a good by any means, the match itself make sense booking wise and had the right ending, with Rhino delivering the Gore to D'Amore.

3.) X Division Rankings Elimination Match - Senshi vs. Shark Boy vs. Petey Williams vs. Jay Lethal vs. Alex Shelley vs. Sonjay Dutt: ***3/4

Pretty much what you would expect from six talented X-Division Athletes. Very solid match with a lot of great action.

4.) Kevin Nash (with Alex Shelley) vs. Chris Sabin: **1/4

Basically it's a big guy vs. the X-Divison (the same kind of feud Team 3D would have with the X-Division later on in 2007-8). This is Nash's first TNA match in quite some time. For what it was, it actually wasn't that bad. Nash needs Shelley's interference to pick up the win.

5.) NWA World Tag Team Titles - America's Most Wanted (with Gail Kim) vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles & "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels: ****1/4

This is the last shot Styles & Daniels have at the NWA World Tag Team Titles. This was a great match. Both teams proved here why they're so good. Gail Kim tries to interject herself, but a very buff looking woman comes in (Sirelda, who was brought in by Styles & Daniels to neutralize Gail Kim). Styles & Daniels use Storm's own beer bottle against AMW and capture the World Tag Team Titles.

Mike Tenay introduces the new public face of TNA Management, Jim Cornette!! (who at this same time was still Commissioner of Ring of Honor). He basically says he's come in here to enforce the rules, make things fair, and help TNA continue to grow and make it the best it can be for the fans.

6.) Scott Steiner vs. Samoa Joe (X-Divison Champion): **3/4

At this point, Joe has yet to pinned or submitted in TNA. This actually was a pretty decent match. Both guys got there stuff in and Joe came out of it looking good. The only thing was the match ended on a Powerslam of all things. Weird...

7.) NWA World Heavyweight Title - King of the Mountain Match - Jeff Jarrett vs. Ron "The Truth" Killings vs. Abyss vs. Sting vs. Christian Cage: ***1/2

Christian comes in as the defending NWA World Heavyweight Champion. This was an enjoyable main event, though at the same time, nothing overly great. I've always been intrigued by this match idea. I've seen this match before by itself (before watching the event as a whole recently) and I remember it being better. In the end, I though it was just pretty good. It's funny....I remember loving the King of the Mountain Match from Slammiversary 2005, but this one I don't think this one was as good. It will of course be remembered more for the Screwjob finish involving Larry Zbyszko, Referee Earl Hebner, and Jeff Jarrett, who won the title, but Jim Cornette quickly requisitions the belt from Jarrett as the fans litter the ring with trash.

Overall: 7.75/10

The World Tag Team Title Match and the X-Division 6-Man are the highlights of this show. The King of the Mountain Match was solid, but will be remember more from the finish, and ended up being a letdown when compared to the match from the year before. The opener is entertaining, and the other undercard match were decent, but that was the main thing, most of the card was just decent. That ended up dragging the card down a bit.

ROH Defy or Deny 2 Review

Three Men look to get another World Title Shot while The Champ looks to deny one of them another shot!

ROH Defy or Deny 2
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1/19/13

1.) Proving Ground Match - Silas Young vs. Adam Cole: ***1/2

I think this was a Proving Ground Match (as indicated on the DVD cover) but idk if it was mentioned on the show. This was a very good opener. Cole & Young put on a great show for the fans in Milwaukee (also Young's hometown). Both looked good.

2.) Bobby Fish vs. Tadarius Thomas: **1/2

O'Reilly was out with Fish while Truth Martini came out later on to scout Thomas. This ended up just being ok. They meshed fine, but Fish slowed the pace down and took the crowd out if it, which I think affected it a bit. Still a fine match.

3.) Charlie Haas vs. Rhett Titus: **1/4

These two had an ok affair at Liv3 Strong and this one was on about the same level. Just kind of there and I felt like it went a little too long. Nothing really too this one. Beer does become involved in the match, if anyone was wondering.

4.) S.C.U.M. (Jimmy Jacobs, Steve Corino & Rhino) vs. Jay Lethal & The Briscoes: ***1/2

Corino cuts a promo beforehand with Rhino & Jacobs in the ring. Basic S.C.U.M. stuff. A pretty fun trios match. All six guys worked well and put on a very entertaining match. Rhino's Gore gets S.C.U.M. the win.

5.) Matt Hardy vs. BJ Whitmer: **1/2

This match kind of makes sense since both guys claim that they "won't die" and are "stronger than death". This was actually fine. BJ showed his toughness by kicking out of a Twist of Fate at One! Rhett Titus throws in the towel for BJ after Matt locked in (I think) the Ice Pick....whatever he calls his guillotine submission.

After the match, Hardy calls out Nigel McGuinness, saying he want's a World TV Title Shot against Adam Cole. Cole comes down and tells Hardy to shut his mouth. They get into it, and Cole has the upper hand until Matt Hardy uses the TV Title as a weapon against Cole. He walks away with Cole's Title Belt.

6.) Kyle O'Reilly vs. Davey Richards: ****1/4

In short, this was an awesome match! Just great stuff from these two. I actually enjoyed Bobby Fish on commentary (he's pretty good). Great stuff here, as one would expect from these two.

7.) Defy or Deny - Eddie Edwards vs. Roderick Strong vs. Michael Elgin vs. Kevin Steen: ****1/2

If one of the three challengers wins, they get another World Title Shot, but if Steen wins, the person he beats to win the match is eliminated from World Title Contention as long as Steen is ROH World Champion. Elgin goes out first, followed by Strong, and Edwards, who is eliminated from contention after being pinned by Steen in the final two. This was an awesome match! Early candidate for MOTY in my book. The action was just non-stop from the opening bell. All four guys worked really well together.

Overall: 8.25/10

While not as consistent as the previous night's show, this one has the bragging rights of having the best two matches of the weekend with Richards/O'Reilly and the Defy or Deny Match. Cole/Young and the Six-Man Tag were good as well, but some of the undercard matches dragged the show down a little bit. Still, don't let that discourage you. This was a very good show.

ROH The Hunt For Gold Review

A Tag Team Rivalry is renewed as ROH returns to Michigan!

ROH The Hunt For Gold
Dearborn, Michigan 1/18/13

1.) Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly vs. BJ Whitmer & Rhett Titus: ***

Pretty standard tag team opener. Fish & O'Reilly look impressive in their victory.

2.) Steve Corino vs. Jay Lethal: **3/4

Corino gets on the mic before the match to "talk some sense" into Jay Lethal, and rants on him. But when he brings up Lethal's Parents, it's too much and Lethal goes after him. I thought the match itself was fine. Nothing overly good, but pretty standard. Lethal wins, as expected.

3.) Silas Young vs. Roderick Strong: ***1/4

Silas has risen up to semi-regular status on the ROH roster. Good for him, because he deserves to be used more. He has a pretty solid match here with Roderick Strong. Nothing fancy...just two guys putting on a good wrestling match.

4.) ROH World Title - Kevin Steen vs. Tadarius Thomas: ***1/4

Thomas is the hometown guy, and Steen makes fun of that. Actually not that bad of a match. Thomas did a fair job against Steen, who busted out some more comedic moments in this one. Not much for a World Title Match, but for it's place on the card, it was fine.

5.) Charile Haas vs. Trey Miguel & Brent Daniels: DUD

The two jobbers in question were supposed to have a match against each other before being interrupted by Charlie Haas. He comes out, drinks beer, squashes both guys quickly (who were rather skinny btw), wins, drinks more beer, and leaves. That's about it...

6.) ROH World TV Title Proving Ground Match - Jimmy Jacobs vs. Adam Cole: ****

If Jacobs wins or goes to a draw, he gets a World TV Title Shot. This match was great! Lots of back & forth action. The last half of the match was especially good with lots of near falls. This is the Jimmy Jacobs people have been wanting since he came back in 2011.

7.) "The Man Beast" Rhino vs. "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin: ***1/2

Before the match Rhino goes off on the announcer (Kevin Kelly), saying he's actually from Dearborn, and talks about places in the surrounding area that mean a lot to him, including pointing out where he lost his virginity. The match itself was pretty good. They did some brawling in the crowd, and the in-ring action was solid for a match of two power guys. The last part of it was really good.

8.) ROH World Tag Team Titles - The American Wolves vs. The Briscoes: ****1/4

This is The Briscoes second defense. There was a small section of the ring that was taped up after a small hole was apparently torn open in the previous match, but they did fine with it. This was a really solid match with great tag team action. Pretty much what you'd expect from these two teams. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish came out to watch towards the end. The Briscoes retain their titles.

Overall: 8.25/10

After a shaky 2012, ROH started off its 2013 House Show/Live Event run in a good way. Aside from one squash, there wasn't a single bad match on this show. Very solid & consistent action throughout. Jacobs/Cole needs to be seen and the Main Event was a very good one to watch.

ROH Final Battle 2012: Doomsday Review

The rivalry between Kevin Steen & El Generico comes to a head in Ladder War IV!!

ROH Final Battle 2012: Doomsday
New York City, New York 12/16/12

1.) “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin vs. Roderick Strong: ***1/2

For a match that went just under 15 minutes, this wasn't bad at all. A fairly solid opener and a testament to how good both guys are. The cheap finish with Truth Martini coming down and interjecting his Book of Truth took away from it a little, but since we knew the feud was continuing, I didn't have that big of an issue with it.

After the match, Strong denounces Martini yet again, leaving him to an awkward moment with Elgin, who then disposes of Martini.

2.) Jay Lethal vs. “The Man Beast” Rhino: **3/4

Lethal's put in this situation after the demands made by Kevin Steen following the incident at Killer Instinct. The match itself was fine, nothing really special.

Steve Corino runs down Lethal on the mic after the match when Jimmy Jacobs attacks him from behind. The beatdown continues until Rhino gives Lethal a Gore.

3.) "Barrister" RD Evans (with "God's Gift" QT Marshall) vs . Prince Nana: **1/2

After much infighting involving The Embassy Ltd., RD Evans (making his in-ring debut in ROH) and Prince Nana finally go one-on-one. I think most people were expecting this to be more of a comedy match, but they actually wrestled...Nana even hit a dive to the floor! Evans eventually picks up the win.  It was a good deal of fun...for 7 minutes.

Tommaso Ciampa makes an appearance in the crowd, clamoring for the heads of Evans & Marshall. They scamper off.

4.) New York City Street Fight - Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team vs. BJ Whitmer & Rhett Titus: ***1/4

The feud between Titus & WGGT seems like it's been going on forever, but with BJ Whitmer in there it freshened things up a bit. This was a really fun street fight, filled with plunder and quite a bit of Christmas paraphernalia. The match will, of course, be more known for when BJ Whitmer went head first through a table, courtesy of Charlie Haas.

5.) "The Prodigy" Mike Bennett vs. Jerry Lynn: ***

Jerry Lynn is on his Pro-Wrestling Retirement Tour, and this is his final match in ROH. Nothing really special to this one, pretty much your standard Bennett vs. ROH Legend Match. There are, of course shenanigans involving Maria & Brutal Bob, and Bennett ends up getting the win, with Lynn getting the last laugh.

Afterwords, Nigel, along with some of the roster, come out to pay their respects to the retiring Jerry Lynn. He gives the typical speech, thanking ROH & the fans, and Nigel presents him with an award. Jay Lethal then intervenes by saying he wants to fight Kevin Steen tonight, but Nigel reiterates the demands forced on ROH by Kevin Steen. This leads to Lethal spitting on Nigel, and a scuffle breaks out. Nigel demands that Lethal be escorted from the building.

After intermission, Kevin Kelly interviews Mike Mondo in the ring about his recovery from injury (Mondo got little to no reaction when he came out btw). He is interrupted by Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish, who go after Mondo. Davey Richards comes out to help but he is subdued. Eddie Edwards comes out and they do a tease where it looks like Edwards will work with Fish & O'Reilly, but he attacks them and the match is on.

6.) The American Wolves vs. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish: ***3/4

This was another match that was awesome despite being just under 15 minutes. Awesome action, as you would expect from four wrestlers of this caliber.

7.) Non-Title Match - Matt Hardy vs Adam Cole: ***

Expectations going into this weren't that high, since Hardy had more or less gained weight and gone though a lot of life trouble in the past few years. Surprisingly, this was actually decent. I though Cole came out of it looking very strong, both by the punishment he took from Hardy and the way he lost the match...essentially Hardy had to cheat to beat him.

8.) ROH World Tag Team Titles - C & C Wrestle Factory vs. The Briscoes vs. S.C.U.M. (Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs): ***

This was match that I think a lot of people were looking forward to, but it ended up disappointing slightly, due to the fact that it was so short. Despite that, the match I thought was still good. The Briscoes winning at the time seemed to not make sense, but in hindsight it makes total sense (to me anyway).

Jay gets on the mic afterwords and offers C & C Wrestle Factory the first shot at their newly won titles, which they agree.

9.) ROH World Title – Ladder War IV - El Generico vs. Kevin Steen: ****1/2

I will say there were some a bit disappointed in this, and I will say this did, to an extent, feel like some as an extended Kevin Steen squash, but I thought the match was very good. The fact that this would be El Generico's last ROH match made the way it went down make more sense. It had a lot of awesome spots and was an enjoyable Ladder War. I'd say it would be tied with Ladder War III for 2nd Overall, but still better than Ladder War II. A great sendoff for El Generico.

Overall: 8.0/10

While this in no way, shape or form matches the awesome Glory By Honor XI, I thought it was still a good show and enjoyable overall. Their was a not a single bad match on here and a lot of story/feud progression. Not as good as it could have potentially been, but still a pretty solid show to cap off 2012.

ROH Glory By Honor XI: The Unbreakable Hope Review

It's Kevin Steen vs. Michael Elgin as Two Canadians fight on Canadian soil for the ROH World Title!!

ROH Glory By Honor XI: The Unbreakable Hope
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada 10/13/12

1.) Caged Hostility Rematch – The Bravados vs. Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander: ***1/2

Not as good as their match in Charlotte, but this was still fairly good. A perfect opener for an iPPV.

2.) Mike Mondo vs. "The Prodigy" Mike Bennett: ***1/4

It should be noted that Mondo suffered his ankle injury in this match, which would keep him out for a few months. The dive off the entrance way, while cool, didn't help his leg much. Still, this was surprisingly fun. Really enjoyed this one.

3.) Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team vs. Rhett Titus & BJ Whitmer: **1/2

So basically, BJ Whitmer took Kenny King's spot in the battle between Rhett Titus and WGTT. This was a good little match. Nothing really good, but ok. There was a fun little spot where Whitmer & Haas traded punches saying "F-U, I'm Charlie Haas/BJ Whitmer!" back & forth, but otherwise a decent match.

Footage from the incident at Killer Instinct is shown where Jay Lethal went crazy after Kevin Steen spit on his parents. Lethal cuts a promo before the match, telling Kevin Steen, the disposed Jim Cornette, and ROH to kiss his ass.

4.) Jay Lethal vs. Davey Richards: ****1/4

These two have had quite a history of matches in 2012. They battled twice for the World Title (once in Philly, once in Baltimore) and were the final two in the 2012 Survival of the Fittest Tournament. This was awesome, probably one of the year's best matches. It started a tad slow, but it picked up & ended up being great. Lethal picks up the win here.

Roderick Strong was supposed to face Tadarius Thomas, but comes out in street clothes. He insults Thomas and quits the HOT (finally). Truth Martini is distraught, but brings out his hired mercenary Rhino to face Thomas, and Rhino was really questioning it, as although he had his gear on, he didn't look happy that Martini was making him wrestle.

5.) Rhino vs. Tadarius Thomas: DUD

It was a little match, but really more of an elongated segment/match that set up the post-match stuff.

Afterwords, Rhino's had enough of Truth Martini, and throws him over the top rope and onto the guardrail!!! Martini has his pants sliced and a huge bruise/gash on his leg....nasty!

6.) ROH World TV Title – Adam Cole vs. Eddie Edwards: ****

Cole & Edwards developed a relationship throughout 2012, and now Edwards is getting a shot at Cole's TV Title. This was another awesome match. Lots of good technical wrestling. Very solid action.

7.) ROH World Tag Team Titles – S.C.U.M. (Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs) vs. The Briscoes: ***1/2

These two had a match at Boiling Point 2012, which The Briscoes won, but this time S.C.U.M. are the World Tag Team Champions and the belts are on the line. I do think this was better than that first match. Although it was a rather basic World Tag Team Title Match, it was fairly solid.

8.) ROH World Title – Kevin Steen vs. "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin: ****3/4

This is Michael Elgin finally cashing in the title shot he earned when he won the 2011 Survival of the Fittest Tournament. By god.....this match ROCKED!!! It was on the same level as the Davey/Elgin match, but I'd say that match was just a tiny bit better. These two put on an amazing match, and both proved why they're incredible professional wrestlers. It's soooo close to the Davey/Elgin match it's not even funny. It took a Package Piledriver from the top rope to finish off Elgin. The only minus I'd say was that Roderick Strong was at ringside to watch Elgin lose, before getting tossed by Elgin, which I guess kinda took away from it a tad.

Afterwords, Strong comes running out and takes out Elgin with a sick kick. Steen is still in the ring when Nigel gets a box delivered to him at ringside. Nigel gets in the ring and says he was instructed to give it to Steen in the event he won. Steen takes the box, and opens it to find an EL GENERICO MASK inside!!! That gets a big pop from the Canadian Crowd and OLE! chants to close the show.

Overall: 9.5/10

This was definitely by far the show of the year for Ring of Honor. After all the iPPV woes, the Jim Cornette Era, and all the other issues they have been having in 2012, Ring of Honor finally did something right and that got the fans talking. A lot of the matches on here were good to great to awesome, with three matches breaking the **** mark. Just an awesome night of wrestling from Ring of Honor, and the start of better things to come...

ROH Killer Instinct Review

Jay Lethal finally gets a shot at Kevin Steen's World Title!

ROH Killer Instinct
Rahway, New Jersey 10/6/12

1.) "The Prodigy" Mike Bennett vs. "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin: ***

Maria Kanellis & Truth Martini are their men's respective corners. A solid opening match that has Elgin looking strong going into his World Title Match at Glory By Honor XI.

2.) The Bravados vs. 3.0: ***1/4

These two team have been having a feud in CHIKARA but this is the first time their feud, and 3.0, have ventured into ROH. Crowd didn't give 3.0 much a reaction but they were into them more and more as the match progressed. A fine tag team match. I would love to see 3.0 again in ROH, especially now since they are the current (as of this review) Campeonatos de Parejas.

3.) Bobby Fish vs. QT Marshall: **1/4

Fish made some ROH appearances in 2007-8 but was never a regular. He's been wrestling in Dragon Gate USA and more so Evolve the past few years. This was ok. I was very happy with the result as it meant Bobby Fish would be staying.

4.) ROH World Tag Team Titles – S.C.U.M. (Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino) vs. Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team vs. Rhett Titus & BJ Whitmer: **3/4

Since this is a Three-Way, it will be contested under elimination rules. This was a decent match. The eliminations happened in rapid succession. WGTT go out first and then get into it with Titus & Whitmer, which allows S.C.U.M. to retain.

5.) Roderick Strong vs. Kyle O’Reilly: ***1/4

A very competitive match. Nice to see O'Reilly actually doing something productive after spending the summer doing almost nothing following his break-up with Richards.

6.) The Nightmare Begins Rematch – Davey Richards vs. Mike Mondo: ***1/2

These two had a Time-Limit Draw in their first encounter. I'd say they topped themselves compared to that first match. Mondo shows once again that he has improved and Richards looks good as well coming off his summer hiatus from ROH.

Afterwords, Richards cuts a promo putting over Mondo, and taking a shot at SBG.

7.) The Briscoes vs. Eddie Edwards & Adam Cole: ***3/4

This is a first time ever match in ROH. Edwards will also be challenging Cole at Glory By Honor XI for the TV Title. A very good tag team match and a fun one to watch. Solid back and forth action.

8.) ROH World Title – Kevin Steen vs. Jay Lethal: ****

For a house show title defense this was looking pretty awesome. Lethal hit 4 consecutive dives on Steen at the start. Lots of great action. Of course we all know what happened at the finish. Steen gets into it with Lethal's parents at ringside, leading to water getting thrown on Steen, Steen spitting on Lethal's parents, and Lethal going crazy in a brawl that needed S.C.U.M. & ROH officials to break it up. Not sure how Lethal continually punching Steen on the floor constitutes a No-Contest. I think it would have been much better if Lethal went crazy on S.C.U.M. with a chair & hit moves on anyone around him (That would have been better for his "Killer Instinct"). Of course Steen tears down the entrance set on his way out and fans litter the ring with trash as Lethal escorts his parents out.

The DVD also includes Lethal taking out Jim Cornette backstage, following the chaos of the finish.

Overall: 8.0/10

I honestly found this to be, for the most part, enjoyable. It seemed that the show got better as it went on, in terms of match quality (especially for the second half, which has a lot of good matches). The idea of the finish was a good idea, but it had poor execution. The show is also easy to get though, enjoyable, and doesn't really have a bad match (although one could be considered a throw-away).
