ROH The Hunt For Gold
Dearborn, Michigan 1/18/13
1.) Bobby
Fish & Kyle O'Reilly vs. BJ Whitmer & Rhett Titus: ***
Pretty standard tag team opener. Fish & O'Reilly look impressive in their victory.
2.) Steve
Corino vs. Jay Lethal: **3/4
Corino gets on the mic before the match to "talk some sense" into Jay Lethal, and rants on him. But when he brings up Lethal's Parents, it's too much and Lethal goes after him. I thought the match itself was fine. Nothing overly good, but pretty standard. Lethal wins, as expected.
3.) Silas
Young vs. Roderick Strong: ***1/4
Silas has risen up to semi-regular status on the ROH roster. Good for him, because he deserves to be used more. He has a pretty solid match here with Roderick Strong. Nothing fancy...just two guys putting on a good wrestling match.
4.) ROH World
Title - Kevin Steen vs. Tadarius Thomas: ***1/4
Thomas is the hometown guy, and Steen makes fun of that. Actually not that bad of a match. Thomas did a fair job against Steen, who busted out some more comedic moments in this one. Not much for a World Title Match, but for it's place on the card, it was fine.
5.) Charile
Haas vs. Trey Miguel & Brent Daniels: DUD
The two jobbers in question were supposed to have a match against each other before being interrupted by Charlie Haas. He comes out, drinks beer, squashes both guys quickly (who were rather skinny btw), wins, drinks more beer, and leaves. That's about it...
6.) ROH World
TV Title Proving Ground Match - Jimmy Jacobs vs. Adam Cole: ****
If Jacobs wins or goes to a draw, he gets a World TV Title Shot. This match was great! Lots of back & forth action. The last half of the match was especially good with lots of near falls. This is the Jimmy Jacobs people have been wanting since he came back in 2011.
7.) "The
Man Beast" Rhino vs. "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin: ***1/2
Before the match Rhino goes off on the announcer (Kevin Kelly), saying he's actually from Dearborn, and talks about places in the surrounding area that mean a lot to him, including pointing out where he lost his virginity. The match itself was pretty good. They did some brawling in the crowd, and the in-ring action was solid for a match of two power guys. The last part of it was really good.
8.) ROH World
Tag Team Titles - The American Wolves vs. The Briscoes: ****1/4
This is The Briscoes second defense. There was a small section of the ring that was taped up after a small hole was apparently torn open in the previous match, but they did fine with it. This was a really solid match with great tag team action. Pretty much what you'd expect from these two teams. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish came out to watch towards the end. The Briscoes retain their titles.
After a shaky 2012, ROH started off its 2013 House Show/Live Event run in a good way. Aside from one squash, there wasn't a single bad match on this show. Very solid & consistent action throughout. Jacobs/Cole needs to be seen and the Main Event was a very good one to watch.
