ROH SoCal Showdown Review

Ring of Honor returns to the Golden State for its first show in the Los Angeles Area!!

ROH SoCal Showdown
Los Angeles, California 1/29/10

Bonus

1.) Larry Zbyszko vs. Scott "Scotty 2 Hotty" Tayler: DUD

So this show was just apart of a much larger Wrestling Reunion Convention, and these two happen to be there...so I guess we're getting this. I honestly don't what to say about this. Johnny Fairplay was involved as well for some reason. Short 2 minute match. Colt Cabana coming out & doing The Worm is the only reason to see this.

Main Show

1.) Tag Team Match - Colt Cabana & El Generico vs. Scott Lost & Scorpio Sky: **3/4

Scott Lost & Scorpio Sky are PWG regulars. This was a fine opening tag team match. Nice way to start the show.

2.) Anything Goes Match - Erick Stevens vs. Necro Butcher: **

These two fought to a DQ at Reverse The Curse in Chicago so this a rematch. Honestly, while it was a fun brawl, I'd say it was no better than the brawl they had in Chicago. Necro has now been feuding with the Embassy for like....7 months now (or something like that). At least Stevens looked good.

3.) Pick 6 Series - Delirious vs. (6) Roderick Strong: ***1/4

This is a rematch from Boiling Point. While this was not as good as that match, it was still fairly decent.

4.) Pick 6 Series - Tyler Black (5) vs. Joey Ryan: ***1/2

Joey Ryan is on his home turf in this one, and it's good to see him up against a big ROH star in Tyler Back. This was very good. Black seemingly got back the momentum he lost at Final Battle and Ryan told a good story with him in this one.

5.) Grudge Match - Jerry Lynn vs. Kenny King: ***

King cuts a heel promo before the match. This is a grudge match after King & Titus took out Jerry Lynn several months before on HD Net. The match itself was pretty solid.

Afterwords King tries to attack Lynn with a chair but he fights back. Despite warning from seniron referee Todd Sinclair, Lynn hits King with a Cradle Piledriver on the chair. Because of this, Sinclair reverses the decision, giving King a DQ Victory after Lynn had originally won the match.

6.) Pick 6 Series - Human Tornado vs. Kevin Steen (2): ***

Human Tornado is a West Coast guy, but has made several appearances for Ring of Honor in the past. Another decent match in this one. Steen already looks comfortable in the heel roll.

After the match Steen continues to attack Tornado until Colt Cabana came out for the save.

7.) Non-Title Match - ROH World Champion Austin Aries vs. Jushin Thunder Liger: ****

This is not the first ROH appearance for Liger, as he competed in a few dream matches during the Weekend of Thunder shows in 2004. Aries cuts a belittling promo before the match, leading to Liger calling Aries an asshole. These two put on a very good match. I think Aries even got busted open at one point. Liger can still go.

8.) Eight Man Tag Team Main Event - Jay & Mark Briscoe & The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) vs. Kings of Wresting (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli) & American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards): ****1/4

You know that when you get four great tag teams together for a Eight-Man Tag, you know it will be good. This is actually the first official match in ROH for the Kings of Wrestling since their reformation at Final Battle. This was just a VERY good tag team match. Fun stuff all throughout.

Overall: 8.25/10

The two main events make this show an easy recommendation as they were both very entertaining. The rest of the undercard is very solid as well, making it enjoyable overall.

1 comment:

  1. So this was what it was all about. I was really on the fence about this one, but it sounds like the main event puts it over the top and makes it worth buying (since I already have both of Liger's appearances before this one.) Will keep an eye out for it at a reasonable price.
